The University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s soccer team will try to build on one of its most complete efforts of the season when it hosts Dixie State on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Vulcans shut out California Baptist 3-0 behind goals by Ian McBride, Max Darris and Mike Reckmeyer.

After going scoreless in four of their past five matches, the Vulcans (4-6-1, 2-4 Pacific West Conference) equaled their season high for goals in a match. Goalkeeper Tyler Hoffman stopped all five shots he faced.

“We finished our chances and that is the only stat that matters,” director of soccer Lance Thompson said in a university release. “We could have won the other day by a couple of goals. We could have lost the other day by a couple of goals, but we didn’t. It could have gone down either way; it all just came down to finishing chances.”

The Lady Vulcans (5-4-2, 2-1-3) weren’t as lucky. They got a goal from Khari Golden but played their second consecutive draw, falling to 0-1-2 on their homestand.

The men host Dixie (1-6-1, 1-3) at 12:30 p.m., and the women play Dixie (4-5-1, 2-2) at 3 p.m.
